Dethrone the Money Tyrant

Light Blue WaterDo you feel that there’s never enough? Never enough money, enough comfort, enough luxury, enough status, enough to keep you secure and show the world that you’re successful and strong?

A feeling of “not-enough-ness” can lead to a variety of conscious and unconscious money-related behaviors:

  • Being controlling toward others
  • Hoarding material wealth above all else
  • Feeling anger in the face of a loss of control

If fears of lack lead you to act in these ways, then you might be a Money Tyrant.

A Money Tyrant may have everything that he or she needs, and perhaps even everything that he or she wants, as well – and yet, the Tyrant never feels at peace.

This can lead the Tyrant to adopt a rigid, secretive, or fearful stance. Outwardly, Money Tyrants may be highly critical and judgmental, while also remaining firmly unforgiving of themselves and others.

If you recognize any of these feelings or behaviors in yourself, this may be because you feel you lack many of the things that money cannot buy: love, healing, true safety in community with others.  The “Money Type Quiz“ can help determine how prominent the Tyrant type is among your Money Types.

While it’s tempting to believe that only more money will fill the holes inside caused by earlier emotional wounds, the truth is that money alone will not heal the Money Tyrant’s loss.

Instead, a Money Tyrant must set aside manipulative strategies and ask directly for what he or she needs and wants – and must believe that these needs and wants are attainable for everyone.

Communication skills are key. Instead of hiding feelings and experiences, a Money Tyrant can take the brave step to share both fears and requests, to venture thoughts directly and honestly in a way that others will welcome hearing.

But first, Money Tyrants must focus inwardly on their fears. They must face their feelings instead of rejecting them as weakness, and they must take positive actions to promote self-acceptance and self-empowerment.

Above all, a Money Tyrant can practice slowing down.   If the Tyrant can tame financially aggressive habits, there is greater opportunity to recognize insecurities and address them head-on in a way that builds bonds with others rather than breaking them.

You can dethrone the Money Tyrant, and most importantly, heal what drove the wounded child to take on the Tyrant’s mantle in the first place. And that will bring more peace than the largest pile of money.
