Giving Up Your Money Innocence

Bamboo RocksDo your have inner fears that differ from your happy-go-lucky exterior? Do people around believe that you’re always carefree and happy, without ever knowing how frightened you really are? If so, you may be a Money Innocent.

Money Innocents lives in a state of dependence, not because they are incapable of managing their own money, but because they have not yet claimed their own power. And yet this lack of power leaves them terrified for their future – and rightfully so.

Some key characteristics of a Money Innocent include:

  • Being indecisive
  • Avoiding confrontation
  • Feeling powerless

Why all this avoidance? Because the Money Innocent is afraid of abandonment. If the Money Innocent steps and claims power and independence, the result might be rejection or loneliness, and so the Innocent remains childlike and instead seeks to be rescued.

But once into adulthood, a true rescue is rarely reliable for the long-term. Parents, spouses, and even children can abandon even the best of people, and many will grow tired of an Innocent’s ostrich-like posture in regard to money.

Before the Innocent is forced through unpleasant circumstances to grow up, it’s ideal for the Innocent to take steps to ease into Money Maturity:

  • Identify your true fears
  • Study these fears, and determine whether these fears are real or simply perceived or exaggerated
  • Consider what would make you feel more financially safe
  • Ask what the obstacles are to making the necessary decisions or taking crucial steps
  • Begin to take steps slowly and feel the satisfaction of work done well

In this way, instead of repressing anxiety, or hiding one’s true beliefs, an Innocent can learn to find safety and strength in competence. By practicing skills and becoming capable, an Innocent can shed the fear and become more perceptive about the world outside.  The “Money Type Quiz“ can help determine how prominent the Innocent type is among your Money Types.
